Who is Jay Gatsby? The main character from the Great Gatsby, a young man, around thirty years old, who rose from an impoverished childhood to become fabulously wealthy. However, he achieved this lofty goal by participating in organized crime, including distributing illegal alcohol and trading in stolen securities. From his early youth, Gatsby despised poverty and longed for wealth and sophistication. Though Gatsby has always wanted to be rich, his main motivation in acquiring his fortune was his love for Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby dedicated himself to winning Daisy back, and his acquisition of millions of dollars, his purchase of a gaudy mansion on West Egg, and his lavish weekly parties were all means to winning Daisy back.

How did he give into the illusion of money?
Gatsby devoted his entire life to gathering wealth, by any means necessary. He believed that the only way for him to accomplish his lifetime dream was to gather immense amounts of wealth. Because of this, Gatsby clearly represents a person who gives in to the illusion of money.The illusion of money is: Money, does not restrain us, it does not hold us back, it does not tell us what we can and cannot do. And yet everyone lets it control them and the life they live. Gatsby represents this illusion that everyone gives into because he lets money control his entire life.
